Every Journey Starts With a Single Step...
Step 7 -Hook Up the Skimmer

Leveling and Setting the Height of the Skimmer
  • The water level on the skimmer, when installed at the correct height, should be approximately 3/4" below the opening.
  • Complete any excavation necessary to the hole dug for the skimmer in order to set the skimmer to the predetermined water level of the pond.
  • It is extremely important that the skimmer is level (side to side and front to back) as well as set to the correct water level. Compact the area beneath the skimmer with a hand tamper to avoid settling.

Connecting the Liner to the Skimmer

  • Hold the liner up against the skimmer to make sure there is slack in front.
  • From the inside of the skimmer box, use a white marker or an awl and lightly mark the outer perimeter of the skimmer opening. Mark a second box 1.5" inside of that line. The interior line is the line that you will follow to cut the liner out for the skimmer faceplate. Marking the interior line insures that you don't cut too much of the liner, which would result in a possible leak.
  • Cut the inner box out and insert the skimmer faceplate into the hole.
  • Important: Insert the skimmer faceplate into the hole with the hinge on the bottom. Installing the faceplate upside down will not allow proper skimming action.
  • Place the faceplate up to the skimmer box and using a nail or awl poke a hole through the liner into the threaded insert in the top corner. Start the screw that goes in the top corner and screw it in lightly.
  • Repeat this step for the other corner.
  • After starting the two corner screws, back them out and remove the faceplate and liner from the skimmer box keeping the liner, faceplate and four screws connected.
  • Make sure that the face of the skimmer box is clean and free of dust and debris. Apply a bead of fish safe silicone sealant around the skimmer opening over or inside the nut inserts. Use approximately half tube of silicone for skimmer (full tube for Grande).
  • Replace the skimmer faceplate and the two corner screws, and then proceed with the bottom two corners. Be careful, over tightening screws may cause them to strip.
  • With the 4 corners secured, you may now punch the remaining 8 holes with your awl and thread in all screws.
  • Let dry for at least ONE HOUR.
