Every Journey Starts With a Single Step...
Step 8 -Add Rocks and Gravel

  • Calculate an estimated quantity of rocks and gravel required for project.
  • When placing the boulders in the pond, keep in mind that you will be stepping into the pond to maintain it occasionally, so the walls you create should be able to bear weight.
  • Start from the bottom, setting the largest character boulders first, and then fill in between with progressively smaller stones. You are, in essence, creating a series of small retaining walls. Stack the stones slightly higher than the next shelf height to keep gravel from slipping.
  • Be careful when placing the large boulders so you don't damage the liner.
  • Install lights prior to adding gravel...see section #9 on Underwater Lights.
  • Cover all remaining surfaces with decorative gravel. This will help lock the boulders in place, as well as cover the remaining liner; protecting it from ultraviolet rays, and giving bacteria a place to colonize.
